ATLANTA -- Craig Kimbrel found ninth-inning drama before a big stretch by Freddie Freeman saved the night for the Braves. Philadelphia Phillies Shirts . Justin Upton hit a three-run homer to continue another strong April, Ervin Santana earned his third win and the Atlanta Braves held off the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 on Friday night. Kimbrel gave up a leadoff single to Roger Bernadina and walked Zack Cozart to open the ninth. Kimbrel struck out Brayan Pena and Chris Heisey before earning his seventh save on Joey Vottos groundout. Freeman made a long stretch at first base for Chris Johnsons throw from third base on Heiseys groundball. Reds manager Bryan Price challenged first base umpire Vic Carapazzas ruling that Freemans foot remained on the bag. The call was confirmed, ending the game. "Freddie did a terrific job staying on the bag," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. He acknowledged he was nervous about the challenge before seeing the replay on the video board "and I felt kind of relaxed." Price said that when looking across the field he thought he saw "a huge gap" between Freemans foot and the bag. He said he agreed with the confirmed out call after seeing the replay. "I had a chance to come up here and look at our own video, which is what theyre getting in New York, and it was a confirmed out call," Price said. "They got the call right in the end, which is what were looking for." Two Cincinnati players left the game with injuries. Third baseman Todd Frazier was pulled in the fifth with tightness in his left leg. Catcher Devin Mesoraco strained his left hamstring and stumbled after rounding third base in the seventh, before limping across home plate. Price said he was protecting Frazier, who had previous tightness in his groin. Santana (3-0) gave up four runs on nine hits in 6 2-3 innings. Following singles by B.J. Upton and Freddie Freeman off Homer Bailey (1-2) in the first inning, Justin Upton hit his team-leading sixth homer. He leads the team with 15 RBIs. "Weve seen him do this before and carry us for a while," Gonzalez said. In 2013, Justin Upton led the majors with 12 homers in April, becoming the fastest player in Braves franchise history to reach the mark. He has hit 35 homers in April for his career, his highest total for any month. "Im just getting it going," said Upton, who is hitting .296 and leads the team with 15 RBIs. Freeman had three hits for Atlanta to shake a mini-slump. B.J. Upton, who was hitting .205, had one hit in his first game wearing prescription glasses. "Well see how the glasses work and if Ill keep them," he said. "I could see the ball better on both sides of the plate. It was good tonight." Bailey allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings. He allowed at least four earned runs for the fourth time in five starts this season and has a 6.15 ERA. The Braves increased their lead to 4-0 in the second on Jason Heywards RBI single. Evan Gattis drove in a run in the third for a 5-0 lead. Jay Bruce had a run-scoring single in the Reds two-run sixth. Cincinnati added two more in the seventh, knocking Santana out of the game. Mesoraco scored on Billy Hamiltons double. Votto had a run-scoring single off Luis Avilan. A strong defensive play by right fielder Jason Heyward helped Santana in the first inning. Votto doubled with one out in the first and moved to third on Phillips bloop single. Votto was thrown out at the plate on a strong throw by Heyward on Jay Bruces fly ball. Votto, sliding head-first, was tagged out in the batters box and never reached the plate. NOTES: Price said closer Aroldis Chapman, recovering from facial fractures and a mild concussion when hit by a line drive on March 19, will throw 35 to 40 pitches in batting practice on Saturday. If it goes well, it should be Chapmans final test before he is cleared for a minor league rehab assignment. ... Brian Giontas agent Steve Bartlett told La Presse on Tuesday that the Montreal Canadiens want to keep their captain - an unrestricted free agent on July 1 - in the fold, while sources tell the paper that the two sides will start talks this week.TORONTO - Jonathan Bernier extended one streak Tuesday night while halting another.Bernier stopped 40 shots in leading Toronto to a 6-2 decision over Anaheim before an energetic Air Canada Centre gathering of 18,932. Bernier anchored the Maple Leafs sixth straight victory and was instrumental in halting the Ducks eight-game win streak.Toronto also handed Anaheim (21-7-5, Western Conference-leading 47 points) its first loss in eight games this month (7-1). The Leafs victory came after a 4-3 victory over the Stanley Cup-champion Los Angeles Kings on Sunday, two wins Bernier said give his club a definite confidence boost.Weve been on a good stretch but I think the last two that weve played were a great challenge for us, Bernier said. (Theyre) big teams, theyre strong, have a good forecheck, they have skill so I thought that was a great step forward for our team and our confidence.Toronto (19-9-3, 41 points) improved to 14-7-0 at home by outscoring Anaheim 4-1 in the third period. More impressive, the Leafs are 10-1-1 since a lopsided 9-2 home loss to Nashville on Nov. 18.I think that was an event for our group, Toronto head coach Randy Carlyle said. Its embarrassing, its one of the things that hopefully crystalized our group and I think it has done that. However, Carlyle feels the Leafs havent been at their best the last two games.I think we were very opportunistic tonight, he said. I feel we are slipping the last couple of games. We have to get back to that more energetic, more stop-and-go, more straight-line hockey. We do have some players who continue to do it but I think as a whole we feel our game has slipped. And Carlyle said Berniers play, particularly the first two periods, allowed Toronto to secure the win.He made some big stops for us early in the hockey game, Carlyle said. He was the main reason we got ourselves in a position to win the hockey game. But Toronto did show a killer instinct in the third, with Phil Kessel scoring two of the Leafs four goals in the period.David Booth scored his first of the season unassisted at 4:37 before Nazem Kadri put away his ninth at 5:28 to put Toronto ahead 4-1. Anaheim starter Frederik Andersen was replaced by backup Ilya Bryzgalov following Kadris goal.Ryan Kesler pulled Anaheim to within 4-2 with his 11th of the season at 8:35. But Kessell cemented the win on the power play at 15:23 before adding his 17th goal at 18:17. Paul Owens Jersey. .For 50 minutes I thought we played really hard and played good, then it got silly, Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau said. Theyre very opportunistic so if you give them those opportunities when you lose focus theyre going to put pucks in the net.Boudreau also had praise for Bernier. He was good, he said. He made a lot of great saves but we missed a lot of really open chances where we didnt hit the net.The big difference was they hit the net on a lot of those great chances and we missed the net.Tyler Bozak and Joffrey Lupul also scored for Toronto.Sami Vatanen had the other goal for Anaheim, which still sports an impressive 11-4-2 road record.Anaheim outshot Toronto 17-11 in the first and had the two power-play chances in the period but the Leafs had the only goal. Bozak scored his 12th of the season at 15:12, poking a loose puck in front past Andersen. The Ducks held a 14-5 advantage in shots on goal in the second, but still trailed 2-1. Lupul put Toronto ahead 2-0 at 1:31 with his seventh of the season, his innocent-looking one-time from near the boards eluding Andersen.Vatanens short-handed goal at 13:13 cut Torontos lead to 2-1. Vatanen scored his ninth of the season when his wrist shot from the faceoff circle beat Bernier.Toronto improved to 14-0 when scoring first and 13-0 after leading through two periods. The Leafs also havent lost to Anaheim since Oct. 21 2008, a 3-2 shootout decision. Both teams are on the road Thursday. Toronto visits the Carolina Hurricanes while Anaheim is in Montreal for the fourth game of its five-game road trip.NOTES — James van Riemsdyk and Kessel both drew assists on Bozaks first-period goal, extending their points streaks to five games . . .
